They are located in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island, on the road from Puerto Ayora to the Itabaca Channel in the Galápagos archipelago.
They are large depressions of volcanic material, formed by a long process of slow land subsidence, where exceptional trees such as scalesia, ferns, mosses, and orchids can be seen, along with some animals like the Galápagos tortoise and the beautiful vermilion flycatcher.
